History

The virtual ‘Asteroid Space Resort’ was first made available via public auction on October 21st, 2005. The resort, located on an asteroid orbiting close to the planet Calypso in Entropia Universe, included 20 large biodomes for hunting and mining activities, a 1000 unit apartment complex, a large themed shopping mall with 66 shops, a docking port for space ships, a nightclub with multiple dance floors and special VIP area, and numerous teleporters for quick travel between various areas of the resort.

Three days later on October 24th, 2005, a winning bid of USD 100,000 secured the resort for Jon ‘NeverDie’ Jacobs, who renamed it Club NeverDie and opened its doors for business on December 19th, 2005.

After eight months of operation Jacobs had recouped his 100k investment claiming “a tremendous vindication to reach the break-even mark so fast”. The resort had quickly become an entertainment hub within the virtual Entropia Universe, with Jacob’s collecting revenue from hunting, mining and retail taxes, and apartment sales. In 2008, the resort was recorded as the most expensive virtual item in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Features

The 20 biodomes on the asteroid resort can be filled with creatures or mineral deposits using the land management system available. By acquiring creature DNA fragments, and managing the land with regular fertilizer injections, the owner can provide customized hunting areas for a range of different hunting skills and preferences.

The apartment and shopping complexes allow avatars to create a home at the resort, and trade with visitors arriving from other planets in Entropia Universe.

In 2006, the virtual nightclub and VIP area hosted a unique party event in conjunction with the Nobel NightCap Party at Stockholm School of Economics. The real world event in Stockholm Sweden used live audio and visuals from the virtual nightclub, as the Nobel Laureates and their guests celebrated together with virtual guests at the resort.

The Future

With Entropia Universe expanding with more and more planets, the resort is sure to welcome many more virtual visitors through its doors in the coming years. While the name of the Asteroid and global achievement announcements will be changed free-of-charge for the new management, the entertainment will be just the same.
